Well done!

The Talent Show and Bake Sale last night was AWESOME!

There were so many kids from 8D involved in both activities!

We had a great night AND raised money for East Wellington Community Services. (The money going towards the seniors program!)

A big thank you goes out to : Cameron, Sam, Anthony, Nicholas, Mark, Faith, Anna B, Jennifer, Shelby, and Vanessa.  They were fantastic!

And a huge thank you to a lot of my kids in 8D for setting up AND taking down the sets!

A quick update for the rest of the week :

Here goes!

1. The Secret Santa starts on Monday. Even though a lot of kids are out of the building for the volleyball tourney and the College Heights Tour, almost everyone will get their "Secret Santa" name tomorrow.  If - for whatever reason - a student can't pick their name ...plan on one "treat" for Monday. And I will make sure ALL the kids know by Monday who they have.

2.  We are going to try to bake cookies on Tuesday.  Please send a toonie, baking sheets, cookie cutters, bowls and spoons, by Tuesday morning.  Any parents wishing to help us bake - come on in! We will start at 11:00  and hopefully bake until 12:30.

3.  The intermediate dance will be periods 5 and 6 on Wednesday. In order to get into the dance, the students must bring in a non-perishable food item for our holiday drive. There will be alternate activities for students not wishing to attend the dance.

4.  The kids will have a math quiz on Monday - covering some of the skills we have been covering in Patterning and Algebra.

5. Novel study literature circle tasks and chapter summaries were due on Tuesday.  Culminating activities will be due the first week back in January.

6. Rough copies of Catching Fire movie reviews are due on Monday.

I think that's it for now!

Have a great weekend!

Miss Waddell

Last Two Weeks!

The next two weeks are going to fly by!

Before I forget : Thank you to all of the parents who came out for Parent Info night for the Grade 8 Trip. Evolve Tours did not give out any brochures - they suggested that you go onto their website, or Google Evolve Tours, and check out their Ottawa-Montreal itineraries.  They WILL be sending home brochures in January.

This week is a busy one : Talent Show is on Wednesday - both dress rehearsal and show.  There is also a MADD presentation for the Grade 7 and 8 students on Thursday.  AND grade 8 girls Gardasil needles are in the morning on Thursday as well.

Grade 7 and 8 hockey is cancelled this week.

Next Week's Activities :

Cookies!!!!! Sometime next week, I would like to carry on the tradition of baking and decorating cookies with the kids!  I would LOVE to have parent volunteers to come in and help us - the more , the merrier- and would ask that if possible you send any bowls, mixing spoons... cookie cutters.......into the school so we have what we need to create these fabulous treats!  Also , a toonie or loonie would be helpful - as I will take care of purchasing all of the cookie ingredients :)

Secret Santa !!!!! Any students wanting to take part in our Secret Santa festivities, will be drawing a name from the hat to pick their "Santa" .  Over the course of the last five days of school before break, the kids SECRETLY leave treats, little prizes, stickers, cards, clues and trinkets for their friend.  On the last day of school, a final gift (no more than $10!!!) is brought in to give to their Santa at the revealing of all Secret Santas.  We will have a class celebration the last day of school before the holidays - all parents are welcome!

A reminder that there will be no school on Friday, December 20.

Take care,

Miss Waddell

Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday!

The kids got back their unit math tests on Tuesday, and most of them did quite well.  The tests need to be looked over by parents, signed, and any questions that require corrected answers are to be completed for Thursday.

Speaking of math, we have begun our algebra unit, and although some of the kids are finding it a bit challenging - they are still plugging away!  I will be available during breaks for anyone who needs extra help. I will also be sending home a bit of extra practice so the kids can keep things fresh in their memories during this unit.

Today in class, the kids had time to work on their culminating activities for their novel studies, and over the next couple of weeks they will have SOME class time.  However, their projects can also be worked on at home and they are due the first week back in January.  This week, they will also have time to work on their movie reviews and their gum wrappers for media.

Tomorrow we head over to Centre 2000 for another visit with the seniors. This visit, we are celebrating the holiday season, and we will be playing games. We leave at 12:15pm, and return at 1:00pm.

Talent Show - The theme this year is The Holidays!!! The Holiday Talent Show is next Wednesday, December 11th night, beginning at 7:00pm.  The show takes place in the small gym (gym with the bleachers). Before the show, student council will be having a bake sale - all kinds of goodies will be available for you to enjoy while you watch the show!  The dress rehearsal for the Talent Show will take place on Wednesday from 1:45pm - 3:15pm in front of the whole school, in the small gym.  Any parents wishing to attend the dress rehearsal are more than welcome! See everyone there!

Take care, and have a great weekend!

December!

December is here!

And I thought things were busy in November!! Here we go!!!!

This week, we will be finishing up things in language : our gum wrappers in media, our Catching Fire movie reviews, all novel study summaries and literature circle tasks...
The culminating activities for our novel study will be completed partially at school, and partially at home.  The kids have pretty much decided on their culminating activity, and will be conferencing with me about their projects this week.

In math, we are continuing with the Patterning and Algebra unit.  Number Sense and Numeration unit tests should be back to the kids by Wednesday. By the last week of school, we should be finished with our Algebra unit, and there will be a short quiz.

In History we are still researching the biography of Louis Riel, and how he represented the Metis of the Red River Colony.  We will have a mock "trial" either before the end of the year, or at the beginning of January to determine whether or not he should have been charged for treason!  Each student will play a role during the trial.... and of course we will have a jury and judge to bring down the final ruling!

In phys-ed, we are working on our floor hockey unit, and still playing the odd game of basketball.

Dates to Remember :

Tonight is the parent information meeting regarding the grade 8 trip. Evolve Tours will be here in the cafeteria at 7:00pm to go over the finer details of the trip.

Thursday : we head to Centre 2000 at 12:15pm to visit with the seniors. This is our last visit - until the new year.

Next Wednesday : the Talent Show!  Dress rehearsal is at 1:45pm - 3:15pm, and the evening show begins at 7:00pm.

Take care,

Miss Waddell

AWESOME!!!

Catching Fire was AWESOME - and so were the kids!!! We had such a great time!

Now the task is to write a proper movie review!  Everything that the kids need to be successful for this activity has been taught in class, and there is an organizer on the Cloud to help get them started.

The unit test for number sense, was on Monday.  We have a few kids finishing up, so hopefully I will have everything marked by Monday - but no promises!

We have started our patterning and algebra unit, and should be finished by Christmas break.

Novel studies are pretty much done, except for culminating activities...  The kids will choose an activity, and work on it until after the winter break.

ONE more reminder : On Monday night - December 2nd - Evolve Tours will be at the school at 7pm to talk about the grade 8 trip.  Please attend if you can, as this session is quite informative.

Take care,

Miss Waddell

Students are expected to complete a writing assignment following the viewing of the movie.  The assignment is a proper movie review, and the expectations have been clearly outlined in class. A organizer for this assignment is also available for the kids on the UGCloud.

On December 2nd, at 7:00 pm, in the school cafeteria, Evolve Tours will be holding a parent information night regarding the grade 8 trip.  Please attend with your son or daughter if possible.  The dates of the Grade 8 trip are June 2 - June 5th.

Fundraising for the grade 8 trip will begin with chocolate bar sales. A newsletter and order form are coming home with the kids today to outline the entire process.  Mr. Primeau is in charge of the fundraising, although if you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call at school.

Talent Show night is the night of December 11th.  The show starts at 7:00pm and has a holiday theme this year!  Auditions are starting this Wednesday.....

Thank you to all of the parents that came out for parent-teacher interviews! It was so nice to see everyone!  If you have not booked an interview yet, please call me at the school to do so.

Community Connection

Community Connection

One of the activities that I wanted to pursue with 8D this year, was a connection to our Erin/Hillsburgh community.  We have the opportunity to visit the seniors program at Centre 2000 once or twice a month, starting next week. The visits will include visiting and talking with the seniors, playing games/cards with the community members, and also learning about the lives and backgrounds of the seniors we visit with. Eventually, this will lead us to the writing of a community members’ biography.
At the beginning of the school year, each parent filled out a blue walking-permission form that allows the students to make trips to Centre 2000, so a form will not be necessary for our Centre 2000 excursions.  Our first visit to meet the seniors will be next Monday afternoon, for an hour.  Any parents wishing to join us are more than welcome. If you have any questions, please call me at the school or leave a note in the agenda.

Take care,

Miss Waddell

Happy Erin Fall Fair and Thanksgiving!

Another week is flying by and I can tell by the buzz in the air that the Erin Fall Fair and Thanksgiving is coming quickly!

We had an awesome day at the Grade 8 Career Day!! I think the kids really got their eyes open to how many options there are for post-secondary opportunities!

We have been quite busy in Room 18... getting things finished that need to be finished....starting new things and working away on others.

Here's a glance at our week so far :

In Language , the kids have been working through their first "Language Rotations".  We have been working on writing Terry Fox news article summaries, we have been working on descriptive and detailed writing, current events and reading the news, and have also been working on small novel studies in our guided reading sessions. We have been working on the writing process as well : brainstorming, organizing thoughts,  writing rough copies, self-editing, peer editing, teacher conferencing and then students move onto a good copy.  Good copies can be typed or written.

In Math, we have completed Internal Angle Theory of triangles, and will be working on a culminating activity that involves designing a geometry logo for a business. The kids will also have a test on Tuesday when they return, that covers our entire geometry unit.

In History we are moving through the causes of Confederation, and the three conferences that led up to the signing of the Dominion of Canada.

In Phys-ed/ Health, we have finished soccer and have moved onto basketball.  In health, we continue on with healthy eating. The kids have been much better at bringing in proper gym attire this week - awesome!

Mr. O'Neil, our teacher candidate has been observing and helping out in our classroom, and this week he will be teaching some of our history and art lessons. We wish him luck!

Art work created by 8D has been sent over to the fair - check out the displays to find the kids' art!

I hope everyone has an amazing Thanksgiving!  Enjoy the time with family and friends!

Pictures coming soon!

Last night we had another wonderful Open House! It was so busy...and so nice to meet everyone!  Thank you for stopping by room 18!

Curriculum updates :

In language we are working on our summarizing skills.  The students have been practicing how to take a large piece of written material and bring it down to a suitable size. Not an easy feat! We will spend a bit more time on this and then move on to some "longer" pieces of writing. This week, the reading component, and our art activities have centred around Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. (See below for run details).

In math we are well into our triangle (geometry) unit and have begun learning about the interior angle theory.  The kids will have a quiz on Friday, and a unit test by the end of next week.

In history our focus is still on Confederation and we will be taking a closer look at the Fathers of Confederation.

We have been working on our soccer skills in gym, and have also been playing cooperative games.  Soon, we will move into a basketball unit, and we will begin our healthy eating unit in health studies.

In art we have been designing optical illusions, and today we worked on a Terry Fox art activity that involved designing a running shoe that symbolizes his Marathon of Hope.

I have been meeting with the parents of those kid who have IEP's. If you have not received a notice regarding this, please contact me at school or drop a note in your child's agenda.

Reminders:

The Terry Fox run is tomorrow during periods 5 and 6.....

Almost another week has flown by here at EPS!

The kids have been quite busy!

We have been writing, creating angles, reading humorous tales, playing cooperative games, creating funky pieces of art, honing our soccer skills....the list goes on.

The kids have a bit of homework tonight : they need to finish the good copy of their writing piece : Max's Deli.  And a couple kids still need to complete art assignments.

This week, all students have been on a school computer to log on to the network, and onto UGCloud.  The Cloud is a fantastic, safe, and multi-faceted program for the kids to use to complete assignments, communicate with teachers and peers, and to create projects online.  If you aren't sure what the cloud is, ask your child :)

Please ensure that all walking forms, lunch procedure sheets, consent forms, and Parent Brag sheets have been returned to the school by Monday.

I would like to meet with all IEP students and their parents over the next two weeks, to go over the IEP and to discuss the best way to program for your son or daughter.  I will be sending a note home soon regarding the best time and date to meet.

Take care,

Miss Waddell
