Halloween!

This Friday the kids will be busy!

There is a costume contest, a most-dressed class contest, a class social......exciting stuff!

On Friday, the kids are expected to have all of their poetry good copies finished and be ready to present them. I will be giving them a period tomorrow to finish their rough copies and to practice for Friday. This activity will include a writing mark, a drama mark and an oral mark. Presenters will be chosen in random order :)

Our language rotations are over for this cycle. The kids may have some things to finish up : a map of Canada, End of Days chapter summaries, The Franklin Expedition current events activities, and some math drills. Each student had plenty of class time to work on these - plus a finish-up period. Hopefully all of these activities are nearly done :)

In math, there is no homework. We have been working on exponents this week and most activities have been completed in class.

I think that's all for now!

Week at a Glance!

Once again, this week has flown by!

A few reminders for today :

In math : the kids received their marked unit tests on Monday. Most students did VERY well. I always accept corrections for extra marks, and of course I offer any extra help at breaks for those kids who want/need it. I rarely do re-tests. Ask your son/daughter how they did on their test :)
We have moved on to Number Sense and will be looking closely at common multiples, factors, factor trees, prime factorization, and square roots.

In language : we are still working on our rotations and they will remain the same for another full cycle. I have also introduced Halloween poetry. The kids are either in partners or on their own, and have been asked to create a piece of spooky poetry. This is a writing activity, an oral and visual activity and a drama activity. I am hoping for MANY creative presentations!

In history : we have introduced Canadian Confederation. The kids will be examining the triggers (4 events) that resulted in the Dominion of Canada.

Google Time : please ask your son or daughter what "Google Time" or "Genius Hour" is. They have been working on their proposals for their projects - and many are very close to having approval for going ahead with them!

Dates to Remember :

Thursday October 23 : MADD presentation tomorrow morning at 9:00am - first two periods of the day

Friday October 24 : PA Day

Friday October 31 : Halloween poetry presented and Halloween party

I think that's all for now:)

Tuesday!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! It certainly was beautiful out!

This week in 8D :

We have nearly finished the geometry and spacial sense unit  only the culminating activity remains. Unit tests will be marked and returned soon. The kids will be starting their number sense and numerations unit with a few lessons on factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers.

In language, we will be doing a class novel study. We will be reading End of Days by Eric Walters. All kinds of activities pertaining to the novel will keep the kids engaged as we work our way through the novel. We have also begun our rotations. I will be working with small groups in a shared reading environment, there will be a current events rotation, a math-related activity, a mapping activity related to history, and a novel study chapter summary writing activity.

In history, we are nearly finished A Profound Moment in Time presentations. After they are complete, we will be looking at the Fathers of Confederation and what part they played in the Confederation of Canada.

In phys-ed we are playing "sockey" and will begin fitness rotations soon.

School hockey starts tomorrow night at Centre 2000 from 4pm-5pm.

I think that's it for now:)

Take care,

Miss Waddell

Wednesday!

It's been an awesome week so far!

Today we have three runners off to our cross country meet in Rockwood - good luck Brooklyn, Emmerson, and Maram!

Tomorrow, the girls have their HPV vaccinations. I'm not sure what time this will take place- although last year, everything was finished by noon.

Math : We are almost finished our geometry unit! We have two more days of review - today and tomorrow - and then the kids will have a test on Thursday. A culminating activity will also be discussed by Friday, and this will be due early next week. Our next unit is Number Sense and Numeration - a large unit that will take us into late November. More info to come as we get into the unit.

Language : We are finishing up our summarizing unit. One final summary is due on Friday - the title is "Get that Lollipop Out of Your Mouth". It is an article about tooth decay. Rough copies are almost done,  then we peer edit, and final copies are due Friday as mentioned.

History : Profound Moments in Time will be presented EARLY next week. The kids have another period to work on them today.  After the presentations, we will move on to our Confederation unit.

QSP Magazine fundraising information packages went home yesterday. Only if you are interested in this fundraiser, do you need the info package.

IEP's are coming home in draft form. They are for students that require IEP's only. Please go over the draft copies and let me know if anything needs to be changed before the progress reports go home in November.

I think that's all for today!

Take care,
Miss Waddell
