It's been another busy week in Room 18!
Here's the scoop :
In language we are back to Language Rotations. The kids are reading, writing and investigating the Winter Olympics in Sochi. One of the projects were are working is "Destination Sochi". The kids are working in groups or three, and have officially become travel agents. Their task is to plan an all-inclusive trip to Sochi, Russia. The trip has to include "the entire package" : travel tickets, accommodation, Olympic events, transportation to and from events, cultural activities, etc. The final activity is to produce a video or presentation highlighting the trip that they have organized for their clients.
Book reports presentations begin next week. The kids were randomly chosen today - the kids now know what day next week they will be presenting. The book report outline was handed out the first day back after winter break, so the kids should be ready to present their books.
In math, we are winding up our Data Management unit. The kids have a few more activities to complete, and a culminating activity will be handed out early next week. NO quizzes or tests in this unit - just a culminating activity to prove their knowledge of the unit.
In art, we are working on a Pointillism activity. This involves using tiny dots that will produce a bigger picture. The kids have been asked to bring in a picture that they want to reproduce using the pointillism technique.
In phys-ed we are dancing, playing badminton, floor hockey, and fitness. School badminton try-outs are still taking place, and final cuts will be made by the end of next week.
Information packages for the grade 8 trip went home last week. Registration and payments are sent directly to Evolve Tours. If you have any questions regarding the trip, please let me know.
Report cards go home on the 6th of February.
Take care,
Miss Waddell

This week!
Hopefully this week, we will have a full five days at school!
There is so much going on in room 18!
Here we go.....
In math, we continue with our Data Management unit.....one page of homework went home on Friday to complete for Monday.
In language, we are doing "all things Olympics"! In our Language rotations this week, we are travelling to Sochi, Russia for the games. The kids are planning a virtual trip for the weeks of the winter Olympics, we are learning about the culture and traditions of the people of Russia.... the list goes on.
The "Making an Impact" writing assignment is still in its early stages - organizers will be completed this week, and by next week the kids should be on their rough copies.
The trial of Louis Riel went very well last week, and we will be wrapping up history this week, and moving on to geography next week.
In phys-ed we are focusing on fitness and dance - which has been quite interesting! The kids have been participating quite well in both activities.
Green grade 8 trip packages were handed out to the kids last week. Please read through everything with your son or daughter , as there is important information that you need to be aware of for registration purposes. If you have ANY questions regarding the trip - please let me know.
Course selection sheets have been completed and if the kids ( or parents ) are wanting to make any changes, now is the time. I will be collecting and submitting all forms this week.
Have a great start to the week!

Another Week!
Here are a few updates for this week :)
On Thursday, we are heading to the seniors program at the high school - 12:15 - 1:00 pm. We are looking forward to playing some games...
College Heights Secondary School is at Erin P.S. today to present and promote their school to the kids.
Next Tuesday, Erin District H. S. is coming over to talk to the kids about course selection as well.
We are definitely getting the kids ready for grade nine! Their course selection sheets are due back into school by tomorrow. I will be sending them BACK home for your FINAL look over - as all teachers have completed their recommendations for course levels (applied or academic). They are due back next WEDNESDAY. The course selection sheets are submitted to the high school next week. If you have ANY questions - please contact me at the school.
Last but not least : Book Reports are to be presented the first week of February. All of the students have been given an outline - with expectations and a rubric - and we will be randomly picking out of a hat, those students that will be presenting first.
I think that's it for now :)

Happy New Year!
Many things are going to be happening in 2014!
New units in almost every subject in Room 18....
Let's get started :
In language :
We are going to be looking at people that have had a positive impact in the world. Young, old, famous and infamous... We will be discussing how a person contributes to their community and to the world in a positive manner, and how particular people have made such an amazing impact on our earth. What is it that drives a person to give their time/money/knowledge to the world and how do they do this POSITIVELY. How can we contribute to our community in a positive manner, and be good citizens.....????? The kids will be researching a person of their choice, developing a biography of that person, and then putting together a drama presentation about the person they have chosen. We will also be looking at inventions that have changed the world in a positive way.... and young people who are developing inventions that could have an amazing impact on our world.
Culminating activities for our novel studies AND movie reviews are due this week.
Book reports will be discussed in class, and will be due at the end of January.
In math :
We are starting our data management unit. The focus will be on data collection, bias in that collection of data, proper surveying, exploring sample size, and displaying data in graphs and plots.
There will be segments of data collection, individual and partnered activities, seatwork, and a end-of-unit evaluation.
Patterning and Algebra quizzes will be returned tomorrow.
In history :
We will be having our trial of Louis Riel this week. Following the trial, we will move on to the industrial Revolution in Canada and Canada's participation in World War 1.
* Geography will begin in February.
In phys-ed :
We will be working on fitness and dance. The gym periods will be divided into fitness circuits for half the period, or dance for half of the period... and then "free play" for the remainder of the period.
In health :
The kids will be cooking and preparing food! They must come up with a healthy, yet easy dish to make, that most teenagers would enjoy eating. The kids will be working in partners, creating a fairly simple dish or meal, and then putting together a how-to-make video for a particular target audience. This activity implements some aspects of media studies into our health activities. Looking forward to it!
In art :
We will be looking at pointillism, which is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of pure colour are applied in patterns to form an image. This will be an interesting and challenging change to what the kids have been doing in art this year.
A quick reminder :
High school applications/course selection sheets aren't due until the end of January. However, if you would like to speak to me regarding any choices that you may be struggling with, or questions about particular courses, please contact me at school and we can chat.
I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday!
Take care,
Miss Waddell
