Letter About Grade 8 Graduation!

Dear Parents, Guardians and Grads!

Can you believe that Grade 8 Graduation is just around the corner!  The grade 8’s and their grad committee have been working so hard to bring the best ceremony and celebration to the entire grade 8 student body. This letter is to inform you about the up-coming events at school that will help to prepare your Grad for their special day. Graduation will take place on Wednesday, June 26th at 6:30pm sharp.  We ask that all graduating students arrive at 6:00pm to begin procession organization. Following the ceremony, there will be time for photos with family and friends. The dance will take place in the big gym after photos and will go until 10:30pm. Ensure that your child has a ride home and can be picked up at the front office doors. Please note : The morning of June 26th, there will be a very important graduation rehearsal from 9:00am to 10:25am. Girls may wish to bring the shoes that they plan on wearing in the evening, as we practice walking onto and off of the stage.  If you wish to pick your child up early that day, they will need a signed note with permission to leave school grounds – no phone calls will be made to get permission.
Traditionally, each grade 8 homeroom is responsible for bringing in a snack/beverage for the graduation dance. If you wish to have your containers back, please ensure that the container is labeled with your name, and these containers must be picked up either that evening or the last day of school.  In past years, each student has paid a $20 fee for the dance and all graduation festivities.  This year, our student Grad Committee has worked hard to reduce the cost to $10 per grad. Please send payment with your child, on or before Tuesday, June 4th.

Snack list :
F8A (Poliseno) – drinks – juice, water or pop
8B (Sehl) – desserts, squares
8D (Waddell) – fruit/veggie trays
8E (Primeau) - munchies – chips, popcorn, pretzels
8C (Reilly) -  cheese and crackers

Due to seating limitations and fire regulations, we have enough tickets for 2 per grad student.  Tickets will be sent home on Monday, June 17th. It is imperative that your child take responsibility for these tickets, as tickets will not be re-issued.
The students chose Viva Las Vegas as the theme of graduation this year. The decorating committee is in need of fake palm trees, real trees, dice, cards, red carpet, paper for giant poker chips and slot machines… anything else that goes along with the Las Vegas theme . If you have any of these items around your home, or know where we could find these items – please contact Miss Waddell, Mrs. McDonald, Ms. Poliseno or Mrs. Reilly at the school. (519) 833-9685. Any parent volunteers interested in helping plan or decorate for grad, please let us know.
We look forward to seeing all of you on June 26th! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at the school.

Sincerely,

The grade 8 Grad Committee

Last Week of May!

This week is a busy one!

Here's what's up in Room 18:

Thursday is City track and field at the University of Guelph - students will be notified by Monday as to whether or not they are competing, and what even they will be competing in.

Thursday is also the Arts trip to Canada's Wonderland.  The cast of Annie and the grade 7/8 band is headed to Wonderland to perform.

This week, we will be working our way through many units : in language we are finishing our magazines with only a movie review and a feature article left to do.  We also continue with our novel study Hit and Run , by Nora McLintock.  Grade 8 speech competitions will take place on Friday - and we have four students competing!  In math, we are still working on our integers unit.  In geography we are studying economic systems, and our "Promote your City" projects.  In phys-ed, we start ultimate frisbee skills, and in health, Mrs. Fairfield ( our child and youth worker) has been visiting our class to discuss cyber bullying, positive uses of technology, healthy relationships.

On Friday, the kids received their rooming information for the grade 8 trip, and soon to follow will be their bus lists. The next and last installment for the trip is June 4th.  Any student who fundraised above and beyond the cost of their trip, will receive a reimbursement.

If you have any questions about the information in this post , please contact me at the school :)

Take care,
Miss Waddell

Badminton Team in action!!!

Wow!

What a busy week! So busy that I haven't had a chance to update the blog!

Here's what happened in room 18 this week!

Speeches went SO well!  Everyone delivered their speech to the class, and the class voted on four finalists to represent 8D in the grade 8 speech competition at the end of May. The finalists are : Sam H., Colleen S., Riley B., and Alana D.!  I will keep you posted about the date of the competition - it is to be determined.
Our magazines are rolling along really well : feature articles, product advertisements, book reviews and covers are due at the end of this week.

In math, we are plugging away with Pythagorean Theorum..... practice makes perfect! We have been problem solving all week, and will have a unit test, before moving on to integers by the end of this week.

In geography, we have been discussing population density, land use, and rural and urban living. The kids have chosen a city to research and are using this research to "promote" their city on a commercial, i-movie, brochure, or poster.  This activity will be due at the end of May.

In phys-ed, we have been focused on track and field, as our school meet is on May 22nd.  The Guelph city track and field day is May 30th, with a rain date of May 31st.

The cast of Annie and the grade 7/8 band attended the Dufferin Youth Arts Festival this past Thursday , and their performance was outstanding!!!

The badminton team has been practicing all week!  The team heads to Fergus on Tuesday to represent Erin P.S. at the regional tournament.  Good luck!

A quick reminder : second installments for the grade 8 trip were due yesterday.  All fundraising notifications were also sent home to parents.  Evolve Tours will notify you this week in regards to how much money you have owing for your child's trip.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!

Take care,
Miss Waddell
