Community Connection
Community Connection
One of the activities that I wanted to pursue with 8D this year, was a connection to our Erin/Hillsburgh community. We have the opportunity to visit the seniors program at Centre 2000 once or twice a month, starting next week. The visits will include visiting and talking with the seniors, playing games/cards with the community members, and also learning about the lives and backgrounds of the seniors we visit with. Eventually, this will lead us to the writing of a community members’ biography.
At the beginning of the school year, each parent filled out a blue walking-permission form that allows the students to make trips to Centre 2000, so a form will not be necessary for our Centre 2000 excursions. Our first visit to meet the seniors will be next Monday afternoon, for an hour. Any parents wishing to join us are more than welcome. If you have any questions, please call me at the school or leave a note in the agenda.
Take care,
Miss Waddell

Happy Erin Fall Fair and Thanksgiving!
Another week is flying by and I can tell by the buzz in the air that the Erin Fall Fair and Thanksgiving is coming quickly!
We had an awesome day at the Grade 8 Career Day!! I think the kids really got their eyes open to how many options there are for post-secondary opportunities!
We have been quite busy in Room 18... getting things finished that need to be finished....starting new things and working away on others.
Here's a glance at our week so far :
In Language , the kids have been working through their first "Language Rotations". We have been working on writing Terry Fox news article summaries, we have been working on descriptive and detailed writing, current events and reading the news, and have also been working on small novel studies in our guided reading sessions. We have been working on the writing process as well : brainstorming, organizing thoughts, writing rough copies, self-editing, peer editing, teacher conferencing and then students move onto a good copy. Good copies can be typed or written.
In Math, we have completed Internal Angle Theory of triangles, and will be working on a culminating activity that involves designing a geometry logo for a business. The kids will also have a test on Tuesday when they return, that covers our entire geometry unit.
In History we are moving through the causes of Confederation, and the three conferences that led up to the signing of the Dominion of Canada.
In Phys-ed/ Health, we have finished soccer and have moved onto basketball. In health, we continue on with healthy eating. The kids have been much better at bringing in proper gym attire this week - awesome!
Mr. O'Neil, our teacher candidate has been observing and helping out in our classroom, and this week he will be teaching some of our history and art lessons. We wish him luck!
Art work created by 8D has been sent over to the fair - check out the displays to find the kids' art!
I hope everyone has an amazing Thanksgiving! Enjoy the time with family and friends!

Great Week!
We have had a busy week in room 18!
Our week began with an awesome trip to Island Lake! The pond study and cooperative games were great! The class had such a positive experience!
Pictures coming soon!
Last night we had another wonderful Open House! It was so busy...and so nice to meet everyone! Thank you for stopping by room 18!
Curriculum updates :
In language we are working on our summarizing skills. The students have been practicing how to take a large piece of written material and bring it down to a suitable size. Not an easy feat! We will spend a bit more time on this and then move on to some "longer" pieces of writing. This week, the reading component, and our art activities have centred around Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. (See below for run details).
In math we are well into our triangle (geometry) unit and have begun learning about the interior angle theory. The kids will have a quiz on Friday, and a unit test by the end of next week.
In history our focus is still on Confederation and we will be taking a closer look at the Fathers of Confederation.
We have been working on our soccer skills in gym, and have also been playing cooperative games. Soon, we will move into a basketball unit, and we will begin our healthy eating unit in health studies.
In art we have been designing optical illusions, and today we worked on a Terry Fox art activity that involved designing a running shoe that symbolizes his Marathon of Hope.
I have been meeting with the parents of those kid who have IEP's. If you have not received a notice regarding this, please contact me at school or drop a note in your child's agenda.
Reminders:
The Terry Fox run is tomorrow during periods 5 and 6.....

Wow!
Almost another week has flown by here at EPS!
The kids have been quite busy!
We have been writing, creating angles, reading humorous tales, playing cooperative games, creating funky pieces of art, honing our soccer skills....the list goes on.
The kids have a bit of homework tonight : they need to finish the good copy of their writing piece : Max's Deli. And a couple kids still need to complete art assignments.
This week, all students have been on a school computer to log on to the network, and onto UGCloud. The Cloud is a fantastic, safe, and multi-faceted program for the kids to use to complete assignments, communicate with teachers and peers, and to create projects online. If you aren't sure what the cloud is, ask your child :)
Please ensure that all walking forms, lunch procedure sheets, consent forms, and Parent Brag sheets have been returned to the school by Monday.
I would like to meet with all IEP students and their parents over the next two weeks, to go over the IEP and to discuss the best way to program for your son or daughter. I will be sending a note home soon regarding the best time and date to meet.
Take care,
Miss Waddell

Welcome Back!
Dear
Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back! I hope everyone
had a wonderful summer! I would like to
introduce myself to you as your child’s grade 8 core/homeroom teacher. My name is Carolynne Waddell and I have been
teaching at Erin Public School for 13 years.
I am really looking forward to teaching the grade 8’s – we are going to
have an amazing year!
Over the next few months, our
goal is to meet the expectations of the Ontario Curriculum, and of course to
make sure the students settle into Erin Public School routines and activities
comfortably. I will be teaching the
following subjects to your child/children : Language, Math, Geography, History,
Phys-ed and Drama, and Visual Art.
·
The language arts program will consist of grammar, creative writing and reading,
persuasive writing novel studies, media studies, book reports (one per term),
and many other language-based activities.
The students will be working in small groups, guided reading groups, and
whole-class lessons and discussions.
·
The math program will cover many areas of study – starting off with
a geometry unit that focuses on line segments, rays, congruent and similar
figures, obtuse, acute and reflex angles.
·
We will be covering history term one and will then move into the
geography program in term two. Our first history unit will begin with a look at
the Confederation of our country. The focus in social studies this year will be
project-based learning. What is PBL? According to Edutopia : “Project-based
learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world
problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning,
students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're
studying.”
·
In phys-ed we will begin with team-building games, leadership skills
and soccer skills. The culminating task for the team-building/leadership unit
will be to design, practice, and carry-out a warm-up activity and a
team-builder activity to a Junior or Primary class. Health will focus on
healthy body image, and healthy eating.
·
In drama, we will be starting with small comedic skits.
·
In visual arts we will explore cartooning and sketching.
This term, 8D will have the pleasure of hosting a
Teacher Candidate from Wilfred Laurier University. He will be in the classroom on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays. We welcome him, and I’m sure
you will meet him during our open house.
During our first day of school, the students and I
discussed classroom rules and expectations that will be followed over the
entire school year. Please ask your
child to go over these with you. They
are posted in the room at all times. My
overall focus for the class is for the students to enjoy a happy, cooperative,
and respectful learning environment.
Each student has been given an
agenda, which will be used on a daily basis to record homework. Please look over the agenda with your child
to review the day’s events, and sign in the place provided. Agendas will be checked on a frequent basis
to ensure that they are being taken home and used properly. I will also be using these books as a means
of communication with you. Please feel free to write any notes or concerns in
the agenda. Another form of communication is our class blog. At www.misswaddell7.blogspot.com
, you can check for up-coming
classroom activities and assignments.
The blog will also be updated on a regular basis.
I look forward to meeting you at
our Open House on September 24th! If you
have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the school or
write a note in your child’s agenda.
Take
Care,
Miss Waddell

Letter About Grade 8 Graduation!
Dear
Parents, Guardians and Grads!
Can
you believe that Grade 8 Graduation is just around the corner! The grade 8’s and their grad committee have
been working so hard to bring the best ceremony and celebration to the entire
grade 8 student body. This letter is to inform you about the up-coming events
at school that will help to prepare your Grad for their special day. Graduation
will take place on Wednesday, June 26th at 6:30pm sharp. We ask that all graduating students arrive at
6:00pm to begin procession organization. Following the ceremony, there will be
time for photos with family and friends. The dance will take place in the big
gym after photos and will go until 10:30pm. Ensure that your child has a ride
home and can be picked up at the front office doors. Please note : The
morning of June 26th, there will be a very important graduation
rehearsal from 9:00am to 10:25am. Girls may wish to bring the shoes that
they plan on wearing in the evening, as we practice walking onto and off of the
stage. If you wish to pick your child up
early that day, they will need a signed note with permission to leave school
grounds – no phone calls will be made to get permission.
Traditionally,
each grade 8 homeroom is responsible for bringing in a snack/beverage for the
graduation dance. If you wish to have your containers back, please ensure that
the container is labeled with your name, and these containers must be picked up
either that evening or the last day of school.
In past years, each student has paid a $20 fee for the dance and all
graduation festivities. This year, our
student Grad Committee has worked hard to reduce the cost to $10 per grad.
Please send payment with your child, on or before Tuesday, June 4th.
Snack list :
F8A
(Poliseno) – drinks – juice, water or pop
8B
(Sehl) – desserts, squares
8D
(Waddell) – fruit/veggie trays
8E
(Primeau) - munchies – chips, popcorn,
pretzels
8C
(Reilly) - cheese and crackers
Due
to seating limitations and fire regulations, we have enough tickets for 2 per
grad student. Tickets will be sent home
on Monday, June 17th. It is imperative that your child take
responsibility for these tickets, as tickets will not be re-issued.
The
students chose Viva Las Vegas as the theme of graduation this year. The
decorating committee is in need of fake palm trees, real trees, dice, cards,
red carpet, paper for giant poker chips and slot machines… anything else that
goes along with the Las Vegas theme . If you have any of these items around
your home, or know where we could find these items – please contact Miss
Waddell, Mrs. McDonald, Ms. Poliseno or Mrs. Reilly at the school. (519)
833-9685. Any parent volunteers interested in helping plan or decorate for
grad, please let us know.
We
look forward to seeing all of you on June 26th! If you have any
questions or concerns, please contact us at the school.
Sincerely,
The
grade 8 Grad Committee

Last Week of May!
This week is a busy one!
Here's what's up in Room 18:
Thursday is City track and field at the University of Guelph - students will be notified by Monday as to whether or not they are competing, and what even they will be competing in.
Thursday is also the Arts trip to Canada's Wonderland. The cast of Annie and the grade 7/8 band is headed to Wonderland to perform.
This week, we will be working our way through many units : in language we are finishing our magazines with only a movie review and a feature article left to do. We also continue with our novel study Hit and Run , by Nora McLintock. Grade 8 speech competitions will take place on Friday - and we have four students competing! In math, we are still working on our integers unit. In geography we are studying economic systems, and our "Promote your City" projects. In phys-ed, we start ultimate frisbee skills, and in health, Mrs. Fairfield ( our child and youth worker) has been visiting our class to discuss cyber bullying, positive uses of technology, healthy relationships.
On Friday, the kids received their rooming information for the grade 8 trip, and soon to follow will be their bus lists. The next and last installment for the trip is June 4th. Any student who fundraised above and beyond the cost of their trip, will receive a reimbursement.
If you have any questions about the information in this post , please contact me at the school :)
Take care,
Miss Waddell

Wow!
What a busy week! So busy that I haven't had a chance to update the blog!
Here's what happened in room 18 this week!
Speeches went SO well! Everyone delivered their speech to the class, and the class voted on four finalists to represent 8D in the grade 8 speech competition at the end of May. The finalists are : Sam H., Colleen S., Riley B., and Alana D.! I will keep you posted about the date of the competition - it is to be determined.
Our magazines are rolling along really well : feature articles, product advertisements, book reviews and covers are due at the end of this week.
In math, we are plugging away with Pythagorean Theorum..... practice makes perfect! We have been problem solving all week, and will have a unit test, before moving on to integers by the end of this week.
In geography, we have been discussing population density, land use, and rural and urban living. The kids have chosen a city to research and are using this research to "promote" their city on a commercial, i-movie, brochure, or poster. This activity will be due at the end of May.
In phys-ed, we have been focused on track and field, as our school meet is on May 22nd. The Guelph city track and field day is May 30th, with a rain date of May 31st.
The cast of Annie and the grade 7/8 band attended the Dufferin Youth Arts Festival this past Thursday , and their performance was outstanding!!!
The badminton team has been practicing all week! The team heads to Fergus on Tuesday to represent Erin P.S. at the regional tournament. Good luck!
A quick reminder : second installments for the grade 8 trip were due yesterday. All fundraising notifications were also sent home to parents. Evolve Tours will notify you this week in regards to how much money you have owing for your child's trip.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!
Take care,
Miss Waddell

Erinspiration!
This week is a busy one!
We celebrate Erin PS and our communities - local and global - and have many activities planned that are linked to the community in which we live.
Yesterday , we had a visit and presentation from Chris Bard - captain of the Canadian Snowbirds - who spoke about having the drive and determination to reach your dreams! An excellent presentation!
Today, our Theme of the Day: Include Others and Don’t Tolerate Bullying! We have an all school slide show, a vow of silence, wear pink campaign, and $2 donations being raised for the building/materials for a school in Africa.
Tomorrow, the grade 8's are headed to the high school for grade 9 orientation. We will be walking over at 10:45 am and returning at 12:45 pm.
HONEY ORDERS : we supposed to be picked up tonight after school, HOWEVER, due to high demand of orders, the farm needs more time to bottle and package the honey. Pick up will be NEXT week. I will keep you posted!
Up-coming dates :
Monday : The kids are starting their speeches
Tuesday : The kids are going tree planting for their Earth Day activities
More information to be posted throughout the week :)

I can't believe the quality of the speeches the kids are writing!!! And the math unit is going well!
Rugby clinics are taking place, and a lot of kids from 8D are involved....and the badminton team try-outs are next week.... which are also attracting the attention of 8D!
Great stuff!
Grade 8 Trip Update :
The grade 8's purchased over $5000.00 in honey sales which is awesome! Chocolate bar sales will begin next week.
A glance at next week :
Monday is a PA Day
On Wednesday and Thursday , we have gr. 9 Orientation at the Erin High School. The kids will be paired up with high school mentors and travel with them for the morning to "get a glimpse" of what high school life is like. When I know the exact day we are going - I will post it on the blog.

Ice and Rain!
Wow - what unbelievable weather we have been having for April!
Nonetheless, another short week in room 18!
So here's the re-cap of what we have been up to:
Language : this week we worked on our speeches, magazine covers, and media unit. Last Friday Mrs. LeBlanc (our principal's wife) came in to talk to the kids about magazines and magazine article writing and editing. The experience was great and will definitely help the kids as they develop their own article-writing skills. We are tackling feature articles next week. Rough copies of speeches are going to be due next Wednesday.
Math : we have been learning about ratios, percents and decimals.....and just recently started unit rate.
Geography : we are talking about population distribution and the factors that affect where people live on the planet. The countries we have looked at : Switzerland, Norway, Brazil, and the continent of Africa.
Phys-ed : we are still working on rugby skills/game techniques with Michael, our co-op student, and have also been working on lacrosse this week. Michael is also running rugby clinics during breaks and the kids have been coming out to learn and hone their rugby skills!
Reminders :
The first installment of the grade 8 trip was due on Wednesday - $160.... cheques made out to Studentkind please! Everyone who registered their child to go on the trip has received an email that outlines the details of the trip and when the deposits are due. Fundraising is on-going...honey orders were due today, although that deadline will be extended to Monday.
Yearbook orders were due today as well, but due to the weather the due date will be extended to next week.
Have a great weekend!

Short Week!
It's been a short week but a busy one :)
This week, we have started some new things...finished up some other activities....
Here is what's going on in Room 18 :
Language : this week we worked on our speeches, magazine covers, and language rotations. Today, Mrs. LeBlanc (our principal's wife) is coming in to talk to the kids about magazines and magazine article writing and editing. She works in the magazine field and has A LOT of experience that she can share with the kids. Looking forward to it!
Math : we have completed our circles unit, and have moved right into ratios, percents and decimals.....not the easiest of topics, but one that the kids can work at :)

Busy busy!
Although this week is a short week, it is a busy one!
Here is the scoop :
In language we are starting our speech unit. The kids will be doing speeches at the end of April, and right now we are going through the motions on how to pick good topics, and how to properly write a speech. We have been watching speeches and talking about appropriate topics, and by next Tuesday, the kids should comfortably choose the topic they will be discussing. We are also continuing with our magazine unit this week as well.
In math we are finishing our circles unit, with a culminating task instead of a big unit test. Next week, we are moving on to our fractions, decimals and percents unit.
In geography, we are concentrating on patterns of human settlement.
In gym, we are focusing on rugby skills and brand new fitness circuits, and in health we continue with our drug awareness unit.
Fundraising for the grade 8 trip is starting up again - with honey and chocolate bar sales information coming home soon. The tour company will be contacting all grade 8's over the next couple of weeks to discuss your payment plans and answer any questions should you have them.
If you have any questions, also feel free to contact me at the school.
Take care,
Miss Waddell

Back at it!
Welcome back!
I hope everyone had a relaxing March Break!
We are back at it in room 18! Tomorrow we are going skating from 11:00am to 12:30pm at Centre 2000. Permission forms went home before the break, and must be here tomorrow for the kids to go skating. There is no cost this time :)
We started our magazine unit this morning, and this particular unit will continue all the way through to May! The kids will be doing activities like : designing their own magazine cover, writing feature articles, creating advertisements, writing movie and book reviews for their magazines... and the list goes on!
In math, we continue with the "circles" unit, focusing on the area of a circle. The kids will be getting their quiz on diameter/radius/circumference back tomorrow, and they will be bringing these tests home for you to look at. They did a great job on their quizzes!
In geography, we begin our migration unit, focusing on why people migrate, and to what areas of the world people migrate to the most.
In drama we continue with our humorous fairy-tale skits.
In phys-ed we continue with our fitness circuits and our rugby clinics.
Have a great start to the week!!

Thursday!
Here are a few updates and reminders for this week :
The grade 8 trip deposit check of $50 is due next Friday - March 1st - either in the office or to me.
A quick snap-shot of what is going on in Room 18 :
In language we are working on the rough copy of our persuasive essays. The final copies won't be due for another week at least, as the kids need time to self-edit, peer edit, and compose their final draft.
In math, we are working on measurement : metric conversion and the area of circles in particular. This math is a little bit challenging - but I am confident that the kids will be successful! And of course - the room will be open at breaks for any students that need extra help :)
In drama, we are turning classic fairy tales and fables in to real-life skits! This should be interesting!
In gym, we are ending our floor hockey unit, and beginning our fitness unit. The students are responsible for a ten-minute warm up (working in pairs) for a gym lesson this month. I am also looking into taking the class to the arena during a phys-ed period, to go skating :)
Any parents wanting to join us - feel free!
In health, we are studying drug awareness and prevention. This is a fairly heavy topic.... so if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the school.
Also :
Next Wednesday at 1:15pm, the Grade 8's are invited to "movie afternoon" in the small gym. The kids pay a $5 admission fee to see the movie The Princess Bride, and all proceeds go directly back to the school to purchase new I-pads.
Take care,

Raining!
Can you believe it's raining in January!
The kids have been cooped up a lot recently due to bad weather - hopefully our weather settles down soon!

Friday - History assignments are to be presented with their partners
Culminating novel-study projects have all been handed in and they look great! We will be having a "sharing" period tomorrow, period 7 for all three classes tomorrow...so the kids can have a look at and appreciate each others work.
Erin District High School teachers visited today to discuss with the grade 8's their course selections for grade 9.... Those sheets will be handed in to the high school next week - should anyone need to make any last minute changes.
The kids will be headed to the high school in April for a tour/orientation session.
Thursday night is parent information night for the grade 8 trip. All grade 8 parents and students are welcome - the meeting starts at 7:00pm.
I hope everyone has a great week!

FREEZING!!!
It's been a chilly week!!!!
But things continue to roll on in 8D!
The kids have moved on to their Data Management unit in math ... and they have two questions for homework tonight.
Their history presentations are due and will be presented - starting next Friday. The kids have at least four more work periods to get things done.
In language, we are finishing up the culminating activities for their novel studies - and they are due this Friday. Kids have a finish-up period tomorrow morning.
Also, we have started to look at "debates" in class... or seeing issues from both sides/perspectives. We are actually going to have in-class debates on various topics... and this will lead to some persuasive writing.
In gym, we have made the shift to floor hockey, badminton, and the odd game of Ninja - ask the kids how to play this entertaining game :)
I hope everyone stays warm today!
Take care,
Miss Waddell
