Snow Snow Snow!

I hope everyone stayed warm yesterday! Depending on who you following - certain ground hogs have predicted another six weeks of winter :) Good times!

This week in room 18 :

Language : We are finishing our End of Days novel study. By Wednesday, each student will have chosen a culminating activity of their choice to complete for the novel. These activities will be due by the end of February.  We are also starting a creative writing activity where the kids are creating a car/vehicle of the future. It is a creative writing- media- oral- visual activity. A lot of this assignment will be student driven, with the kids choosing their own organizer, generating their own ideas, and coming up with a creative way to display their car of the future. Many of the kids have already come up with some great ideas! On another note, the six-square essays they have been working on will be due this Friday.

Math : we are starting our Patterning and Algebra unit. This unit can be a challenging one. We will go through at a comfortable pace, and of course, if the students need any extra help, I will be available during nutrition breaks.

History : our western settlement survival game has begun! The kids are working with their "settler families" to survive while on their way to parts of western Canada. They have loaded their wagons, and are about to set out on their journey! Geography will begin in three weeks time.

Phys-ed : we have been working on basketball and floor hockey skills. Soon, we will also be introducing a badminton unit.

Upcoming Dates :

February 13 - Valentines social and first grade 8 trip installment due

February 16 - Family Day

Take care and stay warm!

Thursday!!

Once again, this week has zipped by!

We are finishing up our novel study in Language and should have the book completely read by next week. The final activity for the novel study will be a student-chosen culminating activity.  We have discussed this as a class, and by next week the students will have chosen their culminating activity.

Culminating activities will be due the second week of February. There will be a gallery walk (sharing of all culminating activities) that will take place the week after. All parents are welcome!

In math, we are winding up our Data Management unit. The kids have a few more activities to complete, and a culminating activity will be handed out early next week. NO quizzes or tests in this unit - just a culminating activity to prove their knowledge of the unit. Patterning and Algebra starts next week.

Information packages for the grade 8 trip went home last week. Registration and payments are sent directly to Evolve Tours.  If you have any questions regarding the trip, please let me know.

Course selection sheets have been handed out to the kids and if parents are wanting to talk to me about the course selection process-  now is the time. Please contact me at school. The kids need to choose and submit all courses BEFORE February 13. Once courses are submitted online (instructions are on the back of the yellow option sheets), there is a print out page that pops up after submission of courses. That sheet needs to come back to school, and I pass these along to the high school.

Upcoming dates :

January 23 - PA Day

January 28 - Health infographics due

Report cards go home second week of February.

Take care,

Good times in 8D

Another week has flown by!

This week, we had visits from Erin District High School and College Heights Secondary School.  Perfect time AND coinciding with the course selection process that is beginning for the grade 8's.

The yellow course selection sheets went home at the beginning of the week for parents to look over. We have been discussing at length the opportunities that the kids have as they go into grade 9. We are also using an online resource called My Blueprint that the kids use to help them map out their course selection for next year and for the remaining of their high school careers. Course selections are due February 13. Registration is done on line on the Blueprint site. You need to sit with your son and daughter and after reviewing the course selections, you need to complete the online registration and submit all courses on the Blueprint site. If you have any questions, please contact me at the school.

Book reports were due this past Monday, culminating activities for our novel study End of Days are due on Monday.

Grade 8's have Scientists in Schools on Tuesday morning.

This Friday is a PA day.

Grade 8 trip information and registration packages are going home today. Please review these with your son or daughter. ALL REGISTRATION AND PAYMENTS are done online. No money or forms come to us at school. If you have any questions, please contact me at school.

Take care and have a wonderful weekend!

We have started our data management unit.  The focus has been on data collection, bias in that collection of data, proper surveying, exploring sample size, and displaying data in graphs and plots. There will be segments of data collection, individual and partnered activities, seatwork, and a end-of-unit evaluation.

Patterning and Algebra will begin in two weeks.

In history :

We will be looking at the expansion of the West. The kids are about to embark on quite the journey over the next three weeks.
